Being Intentional in the Hiring and Retaining of Veteran Team Members

Presented By: Dr. Robert M. Walker, Jr., DMin, MDiv, MA MFT

Over 150 years ago on behalf of a grateful nation, Abraham Lincoln made a promise that We as Americans will take care of those who have fought and/or have paid the ultimate sacrifice defending this Nation and her way of life.  We promised that we would do our due diligence to care for him/her and his families.  To acknowledge those sacrifices and to work to make him and his family whole again.

No one entity; not the Veterans Affairs, not Virginia’s Division of Veteran Services, Not Wounded Warriors or any other Veteran program can make this promise a reality by itself.  It takes the collaboration of the entire nation or in our case the entire State of Virginia.

Our part in this endeavor to make the veteran and his family whole again is to help him or her secure employment.  It is no small thing because for many of us, our job is an extension of who we are. The Human Resource Specialist’s number one responsibility is to facilitate the recruitment/hiring and retaining of the most qualified and best fit team member to their company.  Veterans usually fit the "requirement', but to hire and retain them requires a certain level of intentionality.
